How Toptracer Range Technology is Revolutionizing Local Practice Sessions
4 minutes to read

The last time you were at the range, did you actually get better, or did you just get tired?
Most golfers spend their time digging it out of the dirt without knowing if their work is actually helping. The classic outdoor range has a feedback problem. Once the ball travels 150 yards, your eyes start to deceive you. Tracking true carry becomes guesswork.
I've found that the biggest hurdle for mid-handicappers is a lack of information. By running Toptracer in every bay at five locations (our Glendale range uses Trackman), we turn the range into a performance lab for Toptracer golf. That closes the gap between casual practice and real improvement, with pro-level tech in your local community.
Why hitting balls isn't the same as practicing
Many golfers fall into the trap of mindless repetition. They pull a bucket, grab the driver, and swing until the bucket is empty. That often reinforces bad habits, because there's no objective data to correct them.
Without a structured practice routine, you're essentially practicing how to miss. Balance high-intensity work with a relaxed short game session or a round of putt putt at Lee's Summit or Brookfield to stay sharp without full-swing pressure.
The feedback loop problem
Performance improves through a tight feedback loop. In my experience, a golfer who sees their exact ball flight data after every shot learns faster than someone watching a ball disappear into the sun.
Much like biofeedback therapy helps patients connect cognitive and physical functions, Toptracer provides that loop instantly. You feel one shot. The screen shows you the one you actually hit. That objective record is the foundation of swing refinement.
Why your eyes deceive you at 200 yards
Depth perception is unreliable on a flat range. You might think you hit a high draw that landed at 220 yards, but the data might show a wind-blown fade that carried 195. Relying on your eyes leads to a false sense of security.
Visual tracing technology stops the guessing game by giving every shot an objective digital trail. It removes the mystery from the ball flight.
The Toptracer advantage: Tour-level data for everyone
Tracer lines used to be something you only saw on TV. Now they're on the screen in your bay, and you don't need a private membership or a coach to see your numbers. The system tracks every shot with cameras, so the data follows the real ball all the way down.

Ball-tracking precision explained
When you hit a ball at our facility, the system captures multiple data points instantly. These are the metrics that help players improve most:
- Carry distance: the yardage the ball travels in the air.
- Ball speed: the energy you transfer to the ball.
- Launch angle: the initial height, critical for driver performance.
- Dispersion: how far left or right of your target the ball actually landed.
Democratizing the data
By providing this experience in an outdoor setting, we let you see real ball flight combined with digital precision. Some venues focus on entertainment, but trend-based data and outdoor feedback drive skill improvement.
A golf simulator deserves its due: it solves the weather, and a February session in Connecticut is real. A covered bay solves the same problem. What a screen can't do is show you the whole flight. A sim reads the first few feet and predicts the rest, so you end up studying a calculation. Outdoors you watch the climb, the curve, the apex, and the landing.
A screen also has nowhere to land a chip or roll a putt. Our Glendale, Grand Prairie, and Richardson locations have putting greens, and Richardson has a chipping green too. Every bucket comes with premium balls and high-quality mats. Mats are forgiving and a course never gives you a perfect lie, so treat your range numbers as a best-case baseline.
This data is your roadmap whether you're working solo or during a lesson. It turns a bucket of balls into a technical assessment.
How to use Toptracer to fix your slice
If you want to stop the ball from leaking right, you have to stop guessing why it's happening. Your slice is a combination of path and face angle. Toptracer shows the result of that interaction in real time. To see progress, you must learn to interpret your shot numbers and prioritize fixing dispersion before chasing raw distance.
- Establish your baseline: Hit ten balls with your current swing and look at the dispersion map. Check whether they're starting right, or starting on line and curving right.
- Read the start line and the curve: The ball starts roughly where the face points and curves away from your swing path. Starting left and curving right usually means an out-to-in path; starting right and staying right points to an open face.
- Test and verify: Make a grip or stance adjustment and hit five more balls. The screen will immediately show if your dispersion is tightening.
What should you practice first?
If it's your first time using the tech, focus on these three priorities to maximize your bucket:
- Carry distance gapping: learn how far every club in your bag carries on an average swing. Your best shot is the outlier.
- Dispersion control: try to keep five consecutive shots within a 20-yard wide corridor.
- Launch check: use the screen to see where your driver launch sits, then ask a coach what window fits your speed.
While this data is powerful, combining swing analyzers with coaching often leads to faster breakthroughs than working alone. Stop digging in the dirt without a map. Quality practice and PGA golf pro lessons are available at your local range.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Toptracer range?
A Toptracer range is a driving range where cameras track every ball you hit and show the flight and your numbers on a screen in the bay: carry, ball speed, launch, and dispersion. At Golf Ranch, five of our six locations are Toptracer ranges.
Does every Golf Ranch use Toptracer?
No. Grand Prairie and Richardson in Texas, Lee's Summit and Shoal Creek in Missouri, and Brookfield in Connecticut run Toptracer. Glendale runs Trackman, a different ball-tracking system from a different company.
Do I need a special app to use Toptracer?
No. You can use the bay screens directly, and the Toptracer Range app lets you save your session data and track your progress over time.
Is Toptracer included in the price of a bucket?
Yes. At our Toptracer locations, the tech is built into the experience. You pay for your balls and the tech is ready to use.
Can I use this for a golf coaching clinic?
Yes. Golf Ranch runs group clinics, like the six-week Women's 101, alongside one-on-one instruction, and you can book golf lessons with a PGA pro at locations like Lee's Summit. Bring your Toptracer numbers so your coach sees what you've been seeing.
If a golf simulator near me is what you were searching for, this is the outdoor version of it: the same numbers, on a ball that actually flies.
